City of Aberdeen District is one of the largest Scout districts in Scotland with around 1200 young people and 370 adult volunteers at the last census. The District Lead Volunteer (DLV) is a key member of the District Leadership Team who leads and inspires volunteers to give young people great experiences and skills for life. They make sure their District teams are organised, have enough volunteers, and can deliver a great programme.

The DLV is effectively the senior management role within the Aberdeen District and their key responsibilities are to:

-Make sure teams across the District:
• Work well on their own (and together).
• Support young people and volunteers to feel welcome and included, and make changes (when necessary) so the environment and activities are accessible for everyone.
• Are inclusive and reflect the demographics of their local area.
• Have the resources, skills, and enthusiasm to deliver the Scouts strategy.

-Make sure:
• Volunteers in the District’s teams fulfil their safety and safeguarding responsibilities, including keeping up to date with changes and learning.
• Any helpers are briefed on the practical aspects of safety and safeguarding.
• Volunteers are aware of Our Volunteering Culture, reflect on it, commit to it, and apply it in their teams.

There are 18 Scout Groups and 6 Explorer Scout Units active in the City delivering a wide programme of activities for the 6-18 years age range. These range from Beavers (6-8), Cubs (8-10), Scouts (10-14) to Explorers (14-18).

This role offers the chance to help make a real difference to local young people as you would be part of a small team that will lead and direct how Scouting operates locally. The skills that you will use, such as leadership, can enhance your CV and can be a great way to demonstrate to prospective employers that you have additional skills. You would have access to a mentor, one to one support and a nationally recognised training scheme. Whilst previous experience of Scouting would of course be an advantage, if you know nothing about Scouts, that’s no problem, as we can teach you everything you need to know.

Being part of this team will be rewarding and give you an opportunity to develop yourself as well as inspire the adult volunteers and young people across the District.

Travel details

The role mainly involves operating within the City of Aberdeen boundaries and at our Scout campsite, Templars' Park in Maryculter. There is an occasional requirement to travel to events with other Districts in the North East Region and to National events in Scotland.

Support

Training details

Full support and relevant training is provided to all volunteers. Growing Roots is the learning you'll do within your first six months as a new volunteer, with Safety & Safeguarding completed within the first 30 days. It covers the basics of Scouts, safety, data protection and creating an inclusive environment. Further training will be provided to fully develop into the role.

Frequency & commitment

Flexible times available to help. All help makes a difference and is greatly appreciated.

Volunteers (aged 25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
