Eilean Dorcha Festival 2025

About this event

The Eilean Dorcha Festival (EDF) has firmly established itself as a highlight of the Outer Hebrides' calendar, known affectionately as "The Friendly Festival." More than just a music event, it's a celebration of island culture, community, and the vibrant spirit of Benbecula.

The History of Eilean Dorcha Festival

EDF began its journey with its first event in 2017, growing steadily over the years to become a significant annual summer fixture. The festival's name, "Eilean Dorcha," means "Dark Isle" in Gaelic, a nod to the local history and folklore of Benbecula. From its inception, the vision has been to create a family-friendly event that showcases a wide range of music genres, features a Kidzone, offers workshops, and promotes local food and drink.

Last year the festival won the 2024 Cultural Event of the Year at the Highlands and Islands Tourism Awards. This success has propelled EDF to become a finalist at the Scottish Thistle Awards National Final 2024.

Looking Forward to Eilean Dorcha Festival 2025

Building on its growing reputation, Eilean Dorcha Festival 2025 is set to take place on Friday, July 25th, and Saturday, July 26th, 2025, once again on the Liniclate machair in Benbecula.

The festival promises to deliver another exciting lineup, aiming to blend traditional and contemporary Scottish music with diverse genres. Early announcements for the 2025 lineup include much-loved acts like Skipinnish and The Tumbling Paddies, with more artists expected to be announced. A significant development for 2025 is the collaboration with Ceòlas, who are stepping in as the main sponsors of what will be known as the "Ceòlas Stage." This partnership will further showcase local talent and Gaelic culture, reinforcing the festival's deep roots in the community.

The organising committee is already well into planning, aiming for continuous improvement year on year. This commitment to enhancing the festival experience while maintaining its core values is a testament to the dedication of everyone involved.

Volunteering details

The Indispensable Role of Volunteers

The Eilean Dorcha Festival's success is profoundly dependent on its volunteer workforce. It's truly no exaggeration to say that without their dedication, the festival simply wouldn't happen.

Volunteers are the backbone of EDF, working tirelessly behind the scenes and across the festival site to ensure everything runs smoothly. Their roles are incredibly diverse and vital, including:

  • Pre-event setup and post-event de-rig: transforming the machair into the festival site.

  • Stewarding: ensuring the smooth running of the event, providing directions, and offering a friendly face to attendees.

  • Green Team: Managing waste and promoting recycling to minimise the festival's environmental footprint.

  • Kidzone support: Helping to create a fun and safe environment for younger festival-goers.

  • Logistics and transport: Helping with the movement of artists, equipment, and staff.

These individuals contribute their time, skills, and energy purely for the love of the festival and their community. They help create the welcoming and "friendly festival" atmosphere that EDF is renowned for. Their commitment allows the festival to remain non-profit and accessible, bringing significant cultural and economic benefits to the Western Isles.
