Wood RecyclAbility was set up in as a small social enterprise to provide practical work experience for people with learning disabilities through working with waste wood. Over the last 21 years the organisation has grown steadily from 2 staff and 6 trainees in a small croft and outbuildings to up to 32 trainees each day in a new purpose-built workshop, yard and 5 acres of agricultural land.
Wood is an easy resource to work with, providing trainees with a broad range of activities, whilst Wood RecyclAbility itself provides support, structure and opportunities.
On average 1,500 tonnes of waste wood is collected and processed at the facility every year. Wood is graded on arrival and any contamination removed. Suitable clean wood is used to make a variety of products onsite include garden furniture, nest boxes, bird tables, log stores and wine racks/holders. These products are sold to the public providing a valuable source of income. We work closely with Brewdog, who provide us with their old barrels, which we turn into furniture, bottle holders and bespoke products.
