The role of Crossroads is to relieve stress on the person or family caring for someone with a physical or mental handicap or for an older person and to avoid the person being cared for having to go into hospital or residential care, if there is a breakdown in the caring arrangements. The main service which Crossroads provides to fulfil these objectives is the Care Attendant Service. Paid Care Attendants provide short breaks for carers by taking over their caring role for a few hours. This means that the person being cared for can remain at home while the carer takes time to “recharge their batteries”. This type of regular support not only helps prevent the carer from becoming ill and unable to carry on caring, but also helps sustain the caring relationship, by giving the carer and cared for a break from one another.
