Independent Custody Visiting is a statutory function of the Scottish Police Authority whereby regular visits are undertaken by volunteer members of the community to places where people are deprived of their liberty. This allows them to monitor the care and welfare of detainees and ensure their human rights are being observed. Visitors are independent of both the SPA and the police.
