Clan Events Volunteer - Orkney

Volunteering details

Clan is here for anyone impacted by a cancer diagnosis. We provide emotional and physical support to people who have a cancer diagnosis, their family, carers and friends. Our services are offered to all free of charge, from pre-diagnosis, through treatment and beyond at our support and wellbeing centres located across the north-east of Scotland and Northern Isles.

About the Role
Your role as a Clan EVENTS VOLUNTEER is essential in helping to generate the income needed to enable Clan to deliver vital services to people affected by cancer in your community. You could get involved with a variety of activities; supervising a cheering point at our runs, walks or cycles, accepting monetary donations at a village fair, welcoming guests at our flagship events or handing out information at one of our open days – there are lots of options!

Location
Clan EVENTS VOLUNTEERS are needed to support all of our locations across the north-east of Scotland and Northern Isles.

Reporting To
You may be reporting to one of Clan’s Community Development Co-ordinators, an Events Team Lead Volunteer or one of our Local Services Co-ordinators. At the time of your onboarding, you’ll be advised who your main point of contact is.

Key Responsibilities
Typical activities might include:
• Helping to construct an information stand/gazebo for an event, putting out signage for runs/walks/cycles, arranging merchandise on a stall or setting out chairs/tables;
• Providing a warm and friendly welcome to attendees of Clan events, answering their questions and encouraging people to get involved;
• Supporting larger scale events such as the Annual Ball or Lunch. We need volunteers to do things like steward the car park, greet attendees, give out information, supervise stalls, assist with activities, sell tickets and accept donations;
• Carrying out tasks alongside Clan staff to ensure the best possible experience for our events attendees/participants and signposting towards Clan services where appropriate;
• Helping to raise awareness of Clan services.

There are a variety of tasks and activities that you could get involved in to suit your existing skillset and to perhaps give you new and different experiences.

Clan will make sure;
• The wider Clan team is on hand to answer any questions and support you as needed;
• You have any essential kit that you might need (High Vis tabard, clip board, card machine etc.) but you will need to dress appropriately for the task and conditions. E.g. if you are supervising an information tent on a frosty Winter morning, you must ensure you wear warm, waterproof clothing, or if outside in the sun distributing water on a Summer day, you must bring sunscreen;
• Your line manager holds check-ins to discuss how you are getting on in your role;
• You receive a debrief at the end of each volunteer shift;
• You have access to ongoing training, supervision and development opportunities;
• Expenses incurred whilst volunteering are reimbursed, when claimed in accordance with Clan’s Volunteer Expenses Policy.

• Able to recognize the boundaries of your role (and Clan) and signpost clients to a more appropriate internal or external service if required;
• Confident when engaging with people from a variety of backgrounds;
• Flexible, reliable, enthusiastic and able to comply with Clan Policies & Procedures in all aspects of the role;
• Willing to undertake additional training to enhance the services delivered by Clan;
