Museum Volunteer

Come and help us tell the story of Roman Fort of Trimontium at our museum in Melrose. If you are passionate about history and like meeting new people, we’d love you to join our cohort.

The Trimontium Trust operates the Trimontium Museum in Melrose, the only museum in Scotland dedicated to the Roman and Iron Age in Scotland. Our 5-star museum is a stone’s throw from the Trimontium Roman Fort in Newstead, whose story we tell using some of the many artefacts and treasures discovered by archaeologists.

Museum volunteers help us welcome visitors, sell tickets, answer questions, and tell the story of Trimontium. Volunteers also run the shop, selling souvenirs and membership. Our museum shifts are normally half day (10am-1.30pm and 1pm- 4.30pm) and frequency of commitment is flexible. This role would be ideal for someone who wants experience in the Heritage sector, or just enjoys history and wants to share that enthusiasm with others.

Skills/Experience required

We are looking for enthusiastic and friendly volunteers, who enjoy meeting people.
An enthusiasm for history is desirable but you don’t need to be an expert on Romans! We have lots of volunteers who are experts and lots who have learned as they go along. A willingness to learn is all we need.
No experience necessary and we are happy to support those who may want to go on and look for work in a visitor experience role in the future.
Basic counting/addition may be required. Use of computers and till is also part of the role, but full training will be given.

Travel expenses

The Trust will endeavour to identify and cover all expenses of involving volunteers. Any outlay on behalf of the Trust will be re-imbursed on presentation of a receipt, which are required for our financial records. Where possible, these should be cleared in advance by the Volunteer Coordinator or HRDO
