Root Cause Garden at Thornliebank Library

The Root Cause Project is a funded project by Scottish Library Information Council.

We are looking for volunteers from the local Thornliebank/surrounding community to help us to care for, grow and maintain the outdoor garden space at Thornliebank Library for the whole community to enjoy.

Volunteers do not need to have gardening expertise but will ideally have some gardening knowledge to bring to the role and an enthusiasm for learning about and caring for plants/being outdoors.

This is a lovely opportunity for local people to play a positive role in the fight against climate change and to make the once unused outdoor green space thrive for the local community and for wildlife to enjoy.

About the Role

You’ll be part of a team of volunteers helping to take care of the outdoor space at Thornliebank Library.

You will plant seeds and tend to plants, and fruit or vegetables we want to grow, and help to nurture them. You will play an important role in keeping the outdoor space tidy and attractive.

Activities will include:

  • General maintenance of outdoor area including weeding and pruning (excludes grass cutting)

  • Composting

  • Planting seeds and nurturing them to full growth

  • Tending to plants including fruit and vegetables and harvesting at appropriate times

  • Collecting seeds from self-seeding plants to store in the Seed Library

  • Keeping an up to date inventory of garden equipment

  • Identifying any gardening materials required eg, compost/new equipment
