Retail Assistant - Queen's Street

Volunteering as a member of our Charity Shops, you will enjoy working within a professional team providing a high-quality retail service. Assisting in the day to day running of the shop and meeting agreed performance targets to maximise sales and profitability. You can be talking and serving customers making them feel welcome, creating eye-catching and stylish windows, and displays.

Activities of the role:



  • To promote and raise the profile of the Hospice throughout the local community and the importance of raising funds through the shop

  • To assist and serve customers, providing a service of the highest standard

  • Receive delivery of donations, ensuring gift aid and information is collated

  • To assist with processing stock, including sorting, pricing and hanging of donated items

  • Marketing and presenting merchandise in an attractive and presentable manner to ensure a positive image of the Hospice is maintained

  • To assist the Shop Manager in the rotation of stock with the charity’s other shops

  • If required, be involved with the till operation and handling of cash

  • Replenish and restock shelves when required

  • Sorting donated goods into saleable stock and items for recycling

  • To ensure that the shop premises are always clean and tidy

  • Respond to and resolve customer queries and complaints in person and by telephone

  • Always understanding the importance of confidentiality and maintaining high standards with regard to communicating information in a confidential manner


Skills & Personal Qualities:
Friendly and welcoming manner with excellent customer service skills
Cheerful nature, good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate confidently with the public
Are comfortable taking the initiative to approach people and offer assistance
Work effectively, both independently and as part of a team
Ability to recognise the importance of establishing a good rapport with staff
Good literacy and numerical skills and confident in cash handling
Willingness to undertake training which will help in your role
Smart and neat appearance in line with organisational standards


Time Commitment:
Volunteers should be able to make a regular commitment of a minimum of one/two/three-hour shift on a regular basis.

Shop is accessible by public transport, only a few minutes walk from Queen St Station. Nearest parking is St. Enoch's Centre and NCP at Mitchell Street and The Glasshouse.

Travel expenses

Reasonable out of pocket expenses will be reimbursed on the day of the shift with a valid receipt.
