Community Cars Driver

As the population of the 65+ community in Dundee increases so do the number of elderly people who are isolated and lonely. Help us to keep older people independent, safe and well in their own homes by being a volunteer driver, enabling older people to get to appointments, do their own shopping or enjoy meeting up with friends and family.

You will hold a full drivers licence and if you have access to a suitable and reliable car you must hold comprehensive insurance. You will be happy to collect our customers from their own home and drive them to their desired location. Where appropriate you may have to wait for a period of time before taking the passenger home.

Your responsibilities will include cash handling, light paperwork and you will be required to become a member of the PVG scheme. All costs associated with your role as a volunteer will be met by DCT.

DCT are keen to recruit drivers from anywhere in Dundee.

Experience required

You will be friendly, reliable, trustworthy and patient with an understanding of the needs of older people. You will be a careful and conscientious driver with a good knowledge of Dundee.

Travel details

Driving takes place within Dundee City, although occasionally customers do wish to travel out-with Dundee.

Travel expenses

Volunteers will be paid 45p/mile on journeys completed for DCT either through BACS or by cash.

Training details

Drivers will be assigned a buddy to shadow journeys and provide peer support during induction. The Coordinator will provide ongoing support and supervision with additional training provided when required.

Taster

All new drivers will meet with the coordinator beforehand to discuss the opportunities the role presents and answer any questions. This may also be attended by management committee members or other drivers.

Restrictions

Those applying must have no more than 3 points on their driving license and have full comprehensive car insurance if they plan to use their own vehicle.

Frequency & commitment

Volunteers (aged 17-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
