Trustee

All trustees collectively have responsibility for Play Midlothian, with daily management delegated to staff.

Under the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act (2005), trustees must act in the charity’s interest, operate consistently with the charity’s purposes, act with due care and diligence, and ensure legal compliance within provisions of the 2005 Act and other relevant legislation.

Key responsibilities include setting the vision and strategic direction, ensuring robust financial planning agreeing income generation strategy and budgets, ensure that income and expenditure levels are regularly compared to agreed budgets and that variances are identified and explained, managing assets and resources to ensure they are used only for the purposes set out in the governing document, overseeing business plan development and delivery, promoting a culture of evaluation and learning, safeguarding the charity’s reputation, adhering to its values, and commitment to equalities through comprehensive policy/practice.


Experience required

Understanding of the challenges and opportunities within charity sector, knowledge of Play Midlothian mission/values, strong communication skills, negotiation and change management skills, ability to collaborate with trustees/management, positively represent Play Midlothian through networking/public relations.

Trustees are not paid for their duties, but are able to claim the cost of travel to and from meetings (within reason) and other appropriate expenses.

Training details

Induction : learn about the organisation, its mission, values, key policies are explained, initial role-specific training is provided.
Ongoing Training Regular sessions to develop and enhance skills.
Support : Mentors offer guidance, support, feedback.

Frequency & commitment
As a minimum, you need to be able to commit to: · Frequently attending board meetings, of which there are approximately six per year (every two months, on a weekday evening, for two hours) · Participating in HR and Finance Subgroup meetings, of which there are usually three per year (every four months, on a weekday evening, for two hours) · Attending infrequent development or strategic planning sessions (usually no more than once per year)

Volunteers (aged 16-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
