ArkHub Assistant

The Arkbound Foundation is a literature charity and social enterprise based in Glasgow. The Arkbound Foundation is a charity that aims to widen access to literature and improve diversity within publishing.
We run projects that empower people from disadvantaged backgrounds and deprived communities to get their voices heard, supporting books with important social and environmental themes

We are seeking an Arkhub Assistant volunteer (to the Hub Manager) to help run our newly opened space in Govanhill, 'Ark Hub'. The Assistant Role will be based in a customer-facing environment and will develop existing communication and organisational skills as part of the development of the volunteer.
The hub endeavours to be a part book shop, part events space, with opportunities for visitors to also get light refreshments and to attend workshops. Someone with a creative eye, to enliven a space and draw people in, would be a great asset to this venue.
Combining elements of community outreach and service delivery, our vision is for The Venue to be a centrepiece of the local community and to grow the service to our beneficiaries through the selling of books, light refreshments, other items, and more.

This is an ideal volunteering opportunity for someone with previous experience or who is seeking to develop experience in retail. The volunteer may also have an 'entrepreneurial spark' to develop a small community venue in Govanhill to grow to become an innovative retail space for the local community.

If you have prior experience of helping with a space and can demonstrate fundraising skliis to assist the charity to grow that would be great! This is an ideal opportunity to use initiative and to apply creative solutions, be capable of working independently as well as part of a team, together with be able to multitask whilst meeting deadlines.

Having a good local knowledge of the Govanhill Community and having a commitment to environmental and social causes would benefit this role.

Key role tasks include:

  • Generally assisting with the functioning of the space

  • Ensuring a positive experience for visitors

  • assisting in delivering a programme of events

  • volunteering alongside other volunteers

  • Helping to promote awareness of the space to the local community and across Glasgow

Minimum 4 hours per week.

We can provide opportunities around entering the publishing industry, personal development, enhancing skills with writing and communication, access to free or heavily discounted books, travel subsidy to the venue, and lunch subsidy if working for over 4 hours in a day.

If you are interested please click the ‘Apply’ button below (available when logged in and registered). You will then be contacted by the coordinator by email or phone call. If you have not heard back after 5 working days, the first step is to contact the organisation with the contact details provided.
