Editor roles

We're looking for people interested in volunteering as editors at our non-profit citizen journalism publication. You will need to have a good command of the English language and be willing to adapt to our house style. If you have pre-existing experience, that's great. If not, we will train you. You can do this job from your home and how much you choose to take on is up to you. As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to develop new skills, take training courses, access our library of educational materials and build up your network, as well as helping to support ethical journalism in Scotland and bring people news they would otherwise miss. We are committed to levelling the media playing field, so applicants from minority backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply.

Experience required

High level proficiency in English. A patient and diligent approach. Good communication and negotiation skills.

Training details

We will train you in the basics of editing and show you how to use our systems. If you don't have much experience, we will start you off with simple tasks and help you to build up your skills. All our editors have access to support chats which extend across the Bylines Network so you can communicate with more experienced editors and get quick responses to your queries. We have a library of additional educational resources which we are continually expanding, and we are about to launch a more in-depth editing course.

Frequency & commitment
Most of our material comes in from writers on week days but how you set out your editing schedule is up to you. Let us know when you are available and we will work out the best approach, with no fixed commitment in terms of hours.
