Spirit of Springburn
- VO101380
Spirit of Springburn SCIO (SoS) is a community-led and focused charity aimed at creating opportunities for everyone. Residents, students, businesses, and visitors alike. SoS are working hard to source partnership working, learning and development opportunities and to bring investment into Springburn to create a better future for everyone. With such a large and diverse community, the needs are increasing. With many new projects in development, we have a real need for volunteers to help support us at our Hub in Springburn Shopping Centre.
As a Hub Volunteer you will have the choice to volunteer with any of the following projects:
Admin Assistant: to help people with enquiries such as welfare, benefits, housing issues, form filling and applications (where possible – you will signpost onwards to other organisations).
Community Fridge Volunteer: to escort locals around community fridge on Wednesdays ensuring they receive whatever produce is available, depending on supply. To be part of the fridge team to record fridge temperatures, ensure cleaning carried out, that any deliveries and donations of food received are stored away properly, ensure that food waste is dealt with properly. Any other activities that are required to ensure efficient delivery of service. Food Hygiene Certificate required although training can be arranged.
Springburn Heritage Group: Support with set-up of weekly exhibition in shopping centre. Chat and welcome locals to the stalls. Note any interest in becoming a member of the group and assist with research at the Mitchell Library of any photographs and artefacts referring to Springburn. Record keeping, cataloguing and safe storage of heritage items. This is a very popular project and very important to the residents of Springburn.
Health and Wellbeing Assistant: To assist with the H&W wellbeing event held in Springburn shopping Centre. Also assist with the set-up and management of the newly formed Springburn Health and Wellbeing Forum (set up to pull together GP practices, local health practitioners and others, to utilise their vast experience, skills and resources to look at creating new projects supporting the wellbeing of local people).
Fundraising Assistant: To set up and support local community fundraising activities. Cans and Buckets are available. This includes fun activities, trust fundraising and sponsorship. This is a new project therefore you will have the opportunity to be a part of this from the beginning.
The Social Café: To be involved in the set-up, organisation and running of a community social café within the Springburn Community Hub. This café is not for profit and is a place for the most isolated in the community to come together socialize and have something to drink as well as some cakes and biscuits. The café will run on a Tuesday morning and Friday all day.
Generally, however you will be expected to lend a hand when needed or when there is absence. Tasks include:
• Welcome visitors into the Hub and help with any enquiries (which could mean taking messages, making appointments or signposting on to another organisation).
• Ensure that all record-keeping and admin is carried out daily (imperative).
• Take a turn with cleaning and waste management (particularly fridge food waste) before and after activities.
• Supervise the hub space during activities, ensuring clean and efficient use of space if busy.
We are looking for volunteers who are able to spend at least 4 hours a week supporting us, however the days can be flexible according to your schedule.
A PVG is required however this will be carried out by us. We also need 2 references from a previous employer, lecturer or someone, not related, that knows your work ethic and experience.
