Committee Members

Borders Writers’ Forum (‘BWF’) is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join the committee of this small but enthusiastic member-led organisation that provides support and inspiration to writers in the Scottish Borders.

Role Description :
This is an opportunity to play a role – large or small – in shaping the future of the Borders Writers’ Forum. You can be part of an organisation that helps to develop your own and others’ writing and gives and receives writing-related support and inspiration. It’s a chance to make your mark on the local writing scene, bring your ideas for writing in the Scottish Borders to fruition, contribute to the local creative community, and enhance your CV.

Whether you have a lot of time to give or just a little, your contribution can make a big difference. Here are some areas/roles in which you might want to get involved:

• Literature development and readings

• Publicity, social media, and website

• Chairmanship and committee support (e.g., recording action points)

• Cultural networking with other groups and organisations

• Programming and liaising with guest speakers

• Organising and helping with events (booking venues, set-up/clear-up, refreshments)

• Inspiring others to write and running or organising workshops

• Working with schools to nurture the next generation of writers

• Publishing, book sales, proofreading, editing, and website maintenance

• Any other ideas you have for the Borders Writers’ Forum

Time Required/Commitment:
Committee members are elected to serve for a 12 month period and can continue thereafter, if elected to do so.
Hours are flexible and intended to sit alongside whatever full or part/time job or retirement interest our committee members also have. The committee typically meets in the evening approximately 6 times per year, and, beyond that, committee members are expected to undertake agreed action points and to take their share of attending BWF events (typically 10 per year).

Experience required

Practising or would-be writers of any level OR literature lovers who are interested in supporting home-grown writing, are invited to express their interest in joining the committee, which is wholly made up of volunteers. Additional skills or experience that encompasses any of the above areas of activity are most welcome but enthusiasm and a willingness to contribute to the running and/or development of the organisation are more important.

Travel details

The committee currently meets in each other’s homes (eg Hawick, Galashiels) but this is open to change. Events for the 2024/25 year are scheduled to be held in Melrose (Marmions at the Wynd) and St Boswell’s (St Boswell’s Village Hall) – see our Events Calendar at www.borderswritersforumorguk.wordpress.com
