Become a Telephone befriender for someone living with Parkinson's disease with only 30 minutes of your time!

Re-engage and Parkinson's UK have announced a partnership to offer call companions, our telephone befriending service to people living with Parkinson's, and their carers. The programme will match Re-engage volunteers with older people living with Parkinson’s, or their carers, for regular phone calls. Over the next 12 months, we will help around 150 people, aged 60 and over, who will be referred to the service by Parkinson’s UK.

Are you kind, empathetic and a good listener? Could you help provide some company to someone lonely, with just 30 minutes of your time and from your own home?

We are looking for people to help us out with our Telephone Befriending service for those aged 75+ and living with Parkinsons. Parkinson's disease affects your physical mobility and can make getting out and about very difficult so socialising can be almost impossible if you don't have friends and family nearby. We help provide befriending phone calls to these Older people to help make their week a little bit less lonely and we need your help!

As a volunteer for the Re-engage call companion service in partnership with Parkinson’s UK, you’ll make regular telephone calls to a lonely or isolated older person who is living with or caring for someone with Parkinson’s.

These friendly chats provide a lifeline of friendship for older people and a vital link with the outside world from which they’ve become isolated.

To become a call companion you’ll need to:

-Attend a 30-minute online volunteer group induction
-Complete an ID check
-Provide a reference
-Complete online volunteer training modules

Tasks include:
-Calling the older person you’ve been matched with for approximately 30 minutes either weekly or fortnightly at an agreed time.
-Following the guidance in the online volunteer training so that your call companion calls are enjoyable, appropriate, and in line with our charitable aims.
-Keeping in regular contact with Re-engage and reporting any concerns to the team.
-Keeping your knowledge and training up to date by reading our monthly volunteer newsletter – Re-engage Matters.

Experience required

No Experience or skills required but if you have any other languages, that is also a benefit!

-This is a flexible, home-based voluntary role that can easily be fitted in around your lifestyle and availability.
-We’re looking for call companions who can commit to volunteering for at least 12 months.
-Please note that you must be at least 18 years old to become a Re-engage volunteer.
-To keep our services free for older people, we aren’t able to pay expenses for this role.
