Secretary

The role of Secretary is essential for the operation of the charity. The role is a member of their Trustee body and will play a part in general decision making as well as in the specifics of the Secretary role. They will be expected to attend Trustee meetings, which are usually held around 6 times a year but are more frequent in the run-up to the biennial illuminations.

Alva Glen Heritage Trust was founded about 20 years ago to help maintain the public areas of Alva Glen. The monthly workdays on the first Sunday of every month (except in January), when their team of dedicated volunteers plant and maintain floral displays, remove litter and keep the paths clear in the lower part of the glen. The group commissions and maintains the visitor attractions such as sculptures, as well as specific wildlife features including bughotels and a hedgehog home.

In the upper part of the glen they maintain habitat for the nationally rare Northern Brown Argus butterfly. Once every two years they arrange the renowned Alva Glen Illuminations, which attracts around 4,500 visitors in two hours.

The Treasurer is a key role on the Trustee body and is responsible for the probity of their financial transactions. Alva Glen Heritage Trust are not a large organisation and their total funds rarely exceed £7,500. They have no employees, our funding comes from specific grant applications and revenue from the illuminations.

The duties of the Secretary include:

  • maintaining volunteer contact details; assisting with grant and other funding applications; producing reports for funders where this is required;

  • acting as first point of contact for inquiries from the public, press and stakeholders and maintaining the electronic document store (currently DropBox).

They will have the support of their fellow Trustees, and they also have some very committed and skilled volunteers.
