Guide Dogs Scotland
- VO101856
Guide Dogs Scotland are looking for volunteers to look after puppies in the early stages of their development. You'll provide key early socialisation which will equip them with the skills they need to go and become a future life changer! As a Puppy Raiser, you'll provide a puppy with the vital foundation for its future role as a guide dog. You'll be looking after a puppy for 12-16 months and will guide him or her through training, socialisation, the introduction of new environments and experiences whilst providing a loving home.
There might be the odd chewed slipper along the way, but nothing beats the rewarding feeling of loving and raising a puppy who will go on to make an enormous difference to someone living with sight loss.
Volunteering is a two-way street, so in return for your time you will get.
-The satisfaction in knowing you are supporting people with sight loss to live actively, independently and well.
-The challenge and reward of seeing a puppy develop in your home.
-The opportunity to learn and develop your understanding in dog body language, learning theory, the human animal bond and the life of a Guide Dog.
Experience required
Ideally you will:
-Have time to invest in raising a puppy.
-Be physically able to handle large breed dogs (around 25-40kg).
-Have your own car or access to a car.
-Have your own home or written permission from to have a dog in the home.
-Have access to a secure area where the puppy could go to the toilet during the day.
-Be able to access online content and training materials (you will need your own email address).
