Oral Histories Volunteer

Volunteering details

Sporting Memories is a charity and social enterprise that helps older people to reminisce, replay and reconnect through the power of sport and physical activity. Sporting Memories supports a wide range of people aged 50-plus, including those living with dementia, living with depression or facing isolation and loneliness to improve their mental and physical wellbeing through our regular club sessions, situated within local communities across Scotland.

Project details:
As part of an exciting project alongside Orkney Islands Council, the Island Games, and funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund Scotland, we will be capturing oral histories and memories to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Island Games, before, during and after the 2025 games, which are being held in July across Orkney.

We are looking for volunteers to record and transcribe oral histories of the games. These will capture the diverse experiences and proud memories of current and past participants, officials, spectators, and volunteers. The oral histories will be preserved in an online archive and used in an exhibition during this year’s 20th Island Games.

• Undertaking Oral History Training;
• Conducting and Transcribing Oral History Interviews;
• Providing support with the archiving of oral history for Sporting Memories;
• Assisting with outreach events and exhibition launches;

Why get involved? making a valuable contribution to the social history of Orkney and the Island Games.
