Volunteer within our Residents' Cafe, providing warm and friendly interaction and great conversation as you serve care home residents.

As a William Simpsons 'Cafe Volunteer' you'll spend your mornings engaging residents in conversation as you serve them drinks and snacks within our well appointed, modern and spacious cafe servery area. Your bright, sunny outlook will make the cafe a 'go to' place for residents in the morning. The cafe is open from 10am until 12noon every weekday but you can chose which morning(s) suit you best.

Whilst the main aim of our cafe is to provide residents with a warm, friendly and positive start to their day, you will also be serving hot drinks and selling sweeties, crisps and cans of juice from the cafe shop. This is mostly a 'cashless transaction' with the sale simply being recorded next to the resident's name on a simple spreadsheet, but a few residents will pay in cash. Goods are charged at 25p, 50p and £1 so it is only ever very small amounts of cash to be handled.

Some mornings you may be working alongside one of the Resident Volunteers who help with the smooth running of the cafe and shop.
Once the counter quietens down, you can make yourself a cuppa and move round into the cafe to join the residents for a chat, a game of cards/dominoes etc, or to join them in watching a morning screening on the tv.

Whilst the function is to provide cafe services, the real essence of the role is to engage with residents in conversation, get the discussion going amongst cafe participants and enable every resident to feel included.

Ideally you will arrive at 9.30am to set up the servery area of the cafe. You will be responsible for keeping the cafe & servery areas tidy, clearing tables as you go, wiping down the tables and chairs at the end of cafe and putting the dishwasher on. Your morning will finish no later than 12.15pm.

At William Simpsons, we support up to 71 residents of all ages, life stages and abilities who are living with a long term mental health diagnosis. Full training will be provided and we're a warm and friendly care home, where staff are always on hand and happy to help.
