RNIB Information and Support Volunteer (Scotland)

Join the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), the UK's leading sight loss charity, and play a pivotal role in supporting blind and partially sighted individuals to thrive. As an Information and Support Volunteer, you'll be a key part of our Helpline service, providing essential information and guidance on a range of services, products, and reading materials—including our popular digital Talking Books service, which offers free access to over 23,000 titles.

Role Overview
Use your excellent communication skills to make a genuine difference to people seeking support. You’ll be involved in:
-Answering incoming calls with empathy and clarity
-Providing accurate and helpful information tailored to individual needs
-Making internal referrals and sending follow-up emails to callers
-Using our customer relationship management system and online resources effectively

This role can be carried out remotely from home.


Time Commitment and Duration
Volunteers are asked to commit to one weekday shift per week (approximately 4 hours)


The minimum commitment is six months, to allow for training, support, and a meaningful experience in the role


Support Provided to Volunteers
RNIB is committed to ensuring every volunteer feels confident, valued, and supported. As part of your journey with us, you’ll receive:
-A full induction and comprehensive training before taking any calls
-One-to-one mentoring as you settle into the role
-Regular check-ins with your volunteer supervisor or team lead
-Ongoing access to guidance and resources to help you develop in your role
-A welcoming, inclusive volunteer community


You’ll never be expected to manage challenging situations alone—support is always just a call or message away.

What Happens Next
Once you apply:
-A member of our team will contact you for an informal conversation to learn more about your interests and availability
-If the role is a good fit, we will request your references and enrol you in our training programme
-After completing training, you’ll be supported as you begin taking calls, with regular supervision and development support


Experience required

We are looking for individuals who:
-Are confident using digital systems and comfortable with basic IT tasks
-Have strong listening skills and a calm, friendly telephone manner
-Are empathetic and respectful when supporting people in difficult situations
-Can work well independently and as part of a remote team
-Are open to learning and applying new skills

Applicants must be aged 18 or over and able to provide two references.

At RNIB, we are committed to ensuring that no volunteer is out of pocket for giving their time and skills. Even for home-based roles, we recognise that some costs may arise in the course of volunteering. We can discuss any expenses that may be incurred before you begin volunteering.
