Marie Curie
- VO103223
Offer your time, share a warm conversation, be there when it matters most.
Marie Curie is looking for Companion volunteers to join our team in the Edinburgh Hospice, offering warmth, compassion and conversation for people who are living with a terminal illness and those close to them. Caring for someone who is dying or living with a terminal illness can be an isolating experience. A friendly face, a listening ear and regular companionship can make a real difference to people and those close to them.
What you'll do:
Share stories and meaningful conversations
Connect through hobbies and interests
Provide comfort and emotional support to people and their families
Help someone express what matters most to them
Support families and carers, before and after bereavement
Experience required
You'd be a great fit if you are compassionate, a good listener, approachable and non-judgmental. Emotional steadiness matters as much as warmth. You should be comfortable using email and completing short visit reports after each session. No qualifications or medical background required.
Travel expenses
Travel costs are reimbursed, including mileage in your own vehicle or fares on public transport, and can be claimed monthly. Mileage is paid at the standard HMRC rate of 55p per mile.
Training and support
Full training is provided over a one-day induction covering the role and personal safety. Ongoing training relevant to the work is available throughout, alongside Peer Support and continued guidance from the Companion Team at the hospice.
