Events Helper

RSPB Shetland organises and attends a range of events from outdoor school holidy programmes and adult wellbeing sessions to agricultural shows. Inspiring people about the natural world is one of the most important things we do. We want to engage as many people as possible about the work of the RSPB, how amazing nature is and how we need to work together to save it. As an Event Helper Volunteer you will have the opportunity to meet new people, gain new skills and help in a range of ways including some of the following:


  • Providing an engaging welcome to event participants and members of the public, this may include an event brief, directions and/or health and safety brief.

  • Having organic conversations with event participants and members of the public about the event, nature and the work of the RSPB. This will include talking to children and their families, so it is helpful to have the ability to adapt your communitication style.

  • Event planning , coordination and delivery, including the option to share your own ideas and bring them to fruition.

  • Being aware of Health and Safety indoors and outdoors, recognising that these are changeable when working outdoors. Training will be given.

  • Participating in event reviews and providing constructive feedback.


The most important skill required in this role will be your people skills. We are looking for someone who enjoys meeting new people and is a confident communicator. It will help if you have an interest in Shetland-specific nature and wildlife, but expertise is not a requirement. This is a rewarding role which offers the opportunity to attend a wide range of events and to work alongside a friendly team. You will meet many new people in this role, spend time outdoors, have meaningful conversation and help people have a great interactions with the RSPB. There is always the opportunity to learn and gain skills through volunteering, and by working with us, you'll naturally learn all about the work of the RSPB.

The role is not suitable for under 18s


Training and support will be provided. Travel within Shetland and out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed.


Precise dates and times will vary and will depend on the events schedule. Where practical, this will be developed taking your availability into account.


Some examples of RSPB recent events:


• Beach Explorers/ Woodland Explorers/ Peatland Explorers : school holiday programmes focussing on families connecting with nature.
• Spiggie Open Day: an outdoor festival-feel day, with food trucks, nature connection stations and guided walks.
• Community events such as agricultural shows and community pop-ins.
• Guided walks
• Outdoor Clothing Swap Shop, to ensure people have access to free outdoor clothing to get outside.
• Indoor arts and crafts sessions, with a nature and learning focus.
• Adult-only nature connection sessions, focussing on wellbeing.


Experience required
