Guthrie’s Goslings is our regular programme of workshops aimed at pre-school children aged 2-5 years, and their grown-ups. These 60 min sessions are very popular, and have been taking place for the past 3 years. Guthrie’s takes place once a month on a Wednesday in the Learning Space within Aberdeen Art Gallery, Schoolhill, Aberdeen. There are spaces for 12 children and 12 adults at each session. Tickets are booked in advance. All sessions are facilitated by an AAGM Learning Officer or external facilitator.
Each month’s session focuses on a different theme. These often include exploring materials such as paint, clay, chalk, focusing on one particular artwork or theme in the Art Gallery. Session themes so far have included clouds, trees, shape, colour or a season which can be discovered in our artworks.
Every session begins in a gallery area. Together we play and explore the artworks and gallery spaces. This time in the gallery often involves songs, stories, games, treasure hunts or movement based activities.
The group then heads to the learning space for hands-on practical activities. Here the focus is on open-ended, child led play and process art. Sessions are always fun, very creative and usually messy!
The aims of Guthrie’s Goslings are:
-To offer engaging, fun and creative sessions for young visitors. Providing opportunities to explore themes and art materials that may not be on offer in other learning environments and in a very unique setting.
-To encourage and enable parents and carers to feel confident in bringing young children into the Art Gallery. Demonstrating that AAGM staff and venues are welcoming and understanding of young children and their needs.
-To foster a love of play and creativity in both children and their grown-ups. Encouraging them to play and learn together.
-To encourage enjoyment of the arts in early life, increasing the likelihood of them becoming lifelong visitors and participants.
We’re looking for volunteers who:
-are enthusiastic, friendly and able to engage with young children and their families
-have a sense of fun and a kind, patient nature
-have an interest in making, crafting and art and design activity
-have good spoken English and communication skills
-are aged over 18
-previous experience with early years or children is beneficial.
What's in it for you?:
-Opportunities to develop valuable skills and experiences within the gallery and museum sector, with a focus on public engagement.
-Early Years are a lively audience and sessions are a lot of fun – a sense of positive wellbeing!
-Enjoyment in doing something you like while meeting new, like-minded people.
-Being a part our team and supporting our work.
-Voluntary experience which can be an invaluable addition to your CV.
-Relevant guidance and excellent support is provided to all volunteers. Volunteers will receive an induction in to Aberdeen Archives Gallery and Museums. There will be opportunities to be more involved in the delivery of activities if a volunteer would like to do so. This could include introducing and guiding a simple activity or reading a children’s story.
A fantastic, enjoyable opportunity to help and make a real difference. All assistance is greatly appreciated.
