The Borders Writers’ Forum - Volunteer committee members

The Borders Writers’ Forum (BWF) has been active for 25 years, encouraging writing, open mic performing and publishing through annual programmes of locally held events. They are now planning to expand their activities and are looking for volunteer Committee members to be part of this exciting moment in their development.

No matter what your own writing experience may be, you will be joining a team of enthusiastic and creative colleagues who are committed to providing support and encouragement for their thirty-plus members and reaching out into communities across the Borders to provide open access to writing opportunities.

This is a chance not only for you to develop your own and others’ writing, but to be part of a wider creative network, develop team working and see your own ideas come to fruition.
Here are some areas/roles in which you might want to get involved as a Committee Member.
• Inspiring others to write and running or organising workshops. This could entail helping with first steps; encouraging feedback and discussion; examining various genres and styles to understand what works and why; recommending sources of mentoring and tutoring.
• Nurturing youth/marginalised communities.
• Publicity, social media, and development of the BBF website. Exploring the online potential to include different ages, abilities and backgrounds.
• Chairmanship- training would be provided.
• Secretarial positions – minute taking/action points, or membership communication by email; being present at live events to record attendance.
• Treasurer – using an easy-to-follow Excel system already customised to suit BWF activities; becoming an online bank signatory; being present at live events to be responsible for cash transactions.
• Cultural networking with other groups and organisations such as CABN - Creative Arts Business Network.
• Programming and liaising with guest speakers for regular BWF events.
• Practical support with events - booking venues, set-up/clear-up, refreshments.
• Publishing, book sales, proofreading, editing. To date, there has been a BWF anthology every two years, with readings from current work supported annually by the Borders Book Festival in Melrose.

Volunteers (aged 12-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
