Board Member

Skate Rite is seeking passionate Board Members to help steer our new charity and champion the growth of roller skating across Scotland. We are looking for diverse individuals who can offer unique perspectives and strategic expertise.
As a trustee, you will play a vital role in shaping our mission, voting on key policies, and providing the governance needed to ensure our long-term success. If you have the vision to help us roll forward, we want to hear from you!

Experience required

Charities live and die by their spreadsheets.
Experience: Accountancy, bookkeeping, or grant writing.
Skill: Budgeting for non-profits and identifying funding streams (like SportScotland or National Lottery grants).
3. Community Engagement & Marketing
If people don't know you exist, you can't help them.
Experience: PR, social media management, or grassroots community organizing.
Skill: Ability to build the "Skate Rite" brand and connect with Scotland’s diverse skating scene.
4. Strategic Planning
The "Big Picture" thinkers.
Experience: Business management or project leadership.
Skill: Helping the charity scale from a local group to a national Scottish organization.
5. Lived Experience (The "Soul" of the Board)
You need people who actually understand the pavement.
Experience: Long-term involvement in the roller skating or broader "wheels" community.
Skill: Identifying the actual barriers skaters face (rink access, safety, equipment costs).

💰 Expenses & Financial Support
We believe that volunteering should never be a financial burden. Skate Rite is committed to reimbursing "out-of-pocket" expenses that are reasonably and necessarily incurred while carrying out your duties as a board member.
What We Cover:
Travel: While most meetings are online, any travel to our physical locations in Bellshill or Blantyre for mandatory business (or approved training) can be claimed.
Public Transport: Full reimbursement of standard-class fares (keep your receipts!).
Private Vehicle: Reimbursed at the standard HMRC rate (currently 45p per mile for cars).
Communication & Admin: If you incur costs for printing board papers, postage, or essential phone calls related to the charity, these are covered.
Accessibility Support: If you have specific access needs (e.g., specialized software or support to attend meetings), please let us know. We are committed to radical accessibility and will work to cover these costs.
Childcare/Dependent Care: In many cases, we can reimburse reasonable costs for care that allows you to attend essential board meetings (this must be pre-approved by the Chair).
How to Claim:
Keep Receipts: Always ask for a receipt or take a photo of your ticket.
Submit a Claim: We provide a simple digital expense form.
Quick Reimbursement: We aim to process and pay all valid claims within 14 days so you aren't waiting on your money.
Note for Trustees: > According to OSCR and HMRC rules, these payments are not considered "income" and are tax-free, provided they only cover actual costs. They will not affect your personal tax or any state benefits you may receive.

Support
Taster

For a new charity like Skate Rite, the induction process is less about a "formal test" and more about making sure you feel confident and legally protected before you start making big decisions.
Here is how we’ll get you up to speed:
🛼 Induction & Taster Details

  1. The "Observer" Taster Session
Before you officially sign on the dotted line, we invite you to observe one of our monthly board meetings on Microsoft Teams.
Purpose: This gives you a "no-pressure" look at how we operate, the types of policies we discuss, and the dynamic of the current team.
No Commitment: You can listen in (camera off is fine!) to decide if the role is the right fit for you before making it official.

  2. The Welcome Induction Pack
Once you join, you’ll receive a digital Trustee Induction Pack. This includes:
The "Blueprints": Our constitution and mission statement.
The Essentials: A plain-English guide to OSCR (Scottish Charity Regulator) rules so you know exactly what your legal responsibilities are.
Recent Progress: Minutes from the last two meetings and our current goals for the next 6 months.

  3. Strategic "Meet & Greet"
We will arrange a brief 1-on-1 online chat with the Chair or a founding member.
Goal: To discuss how your specific skills (whether that’s finance, marketing, or lived experience) can best be used to help the charity grow.
Support: We’ll walk you through our digital tools (Teams/File sharing) so you’re never left scratching your head over the tech.

  4. Optional Site Visit (The Fun Part!)
While not mandatory, we highly recommend a "taster visit" to one of our sessions at Bellshill YMCA or Blantyre TACT Hall.
Seeing the skaters in action is the best induction possible—it reminds us exactly why we’re doing the "boring" paperwork!
Note on Transparency: As of 2026, OSCR requires all charities to list trustee names on the public register. Part of your induction will include a quick briefing on these transparency requirements and how we handle your data.

To keep things low-pressure, cameras are not required—we care about your input, not your backdrop! Annual General Meeting (AGM): We hold one formal AGM per year to review our accounts and progress. 2. Level of Commitment Time: On average, you should expect to dedicate about 3–5 hours per month. This includes the monthly meeting plus time to review any documents or policies sent out beforehand.
