Welcome Volunteer | Ideally 2-3 hours per week until October 2026
The National Museum of Rural Life is a large site encompassing an exhibition building, playpark, 1950’s farmhouse and traditional working farm so visitors often require some orientation upon arrival. We are looking for people who can be a friendly face, to meet our visitors as they arrive, with a warm greeting and guidance to enjoy a safe and memorable visit. This includes providing guidance to visitors on how to access various areas and information about events and daily highlights.
Main Duties & Activities
• Standing outside the entrance to our main museum building to welcome visitors to the site
• Scanning admission tickets bought online in advance of visit
• Signposting visitors who do not have a ticket to start their visit at the reception desk
• Explain admission options – Annual Pass / National Museum Scotland Membership / National Trust for Scotland Membership • Promote upcoming events and on the day activities
• Provide visitors with information about daily highlights
• Offer visitors help, directions and conversation
• Answer orientation questions from visitors
• Keep a watchful eye to ensure everyone is safe and happy
• Use a radio to communicate with the Visitor Experience team
• Add to log sheet details of visitors not willing to check in to the site.

Travel details
The museum is 200m from the bus stop on Stewartfield Way.
To reach this stop, the First Glasgow 31 service runs between Glasgow to Carmunnock. Change at Carmunnock to the JMB Travel 31b service to East Kilbride.
The museum is 1km from the bus stop on South Road. To reach this stop, the First Glasgow 6 service runs frequently through Glasgow.
There are three train stations within a few miles of the museum; East Kilbride, Hairmyres, and Thorntonhall.
