My name is Alistair Nisbet I volunteer with the West Lothian Recovery Service. I am a recovery cafe volunteer, I started to volunteer at this organisation as I was supported and am still supported in my recovery. This is very fulfilling having the ability to serve others and share my experience throughout my life. Giving my time to volunteering has brought about changes in my life for it is no longer about me but the people I see everyday. I have so much gratitude for the opportunity to learn about others in the community and addiction services as a whole and being around people everyday allows me to grow and share my story. It is very humbling and gives me a sense of who I am, identifying with people at their level communicating talking and listening. I have many great memories and learned a lot in training for this role which I hope to add to in the future. Support worker career development is great personal development and I find it is a good and healthy experience working alongside key workers. I would recommend volunteering to anyone as a gateway to possible opportunities for work and to develop skills and knowledge about organisations and people as whole my journey continues I am blessed.
