This Befriending Week, meet Steve, who currently volunteers as part of our companion at home service in Scotland.

At 71, he shares why he decided to give his time to volunteer with us:

“It just seemed a good thing to be able to contribute something positive. I see lots of people who are kind of almost lost in the system. They get left and there’s nobody there to help them, so it just opened my eyes to the number that are out there.

"The person I was previously matched with was a lady and she had dementia. Her husband found the visits really useful because it meant he had a couple of hours talking to somebody who could respond.

"I enjoy speaking to different people. For me, it makes me go out and do things. It’s very fulfilling because they’ve all said, ‘thank you.’ You know that you’re doing something that is helping them when they’re in a very, very difficult situation. So you do get thanks for doing it and that encourage you to do it as well.”
