Tracey Fullerton

Guide Dogs Scotland

Tracey Fullerton, from Falkirk, recently bid an emotional and bittersweet farewell to Lake, the guide dog puppy she has lovingly raised for the past 13 months. Lake has now begun formal training with the charity Guide Dogs Scotland.

Tracey shared her experience as a volunteer Puppy Raiser and expressed her pride in helping to transform the lives of people with sight loss across Scotland and the UK.

“Most of what we do with our pups is straightforward. We provide them with a loving home, teach basic commands, and introduce them to various experiences that will benefit them when they are partnered with someone living with sight loss. I never expected to meet so many wonderful people through this role. You are never alone in this journey.

The best part is knowing you are making a difference. Your puppy could become a life-changer, and you feel immense happiness for their future partner, who will have this amazing dog in their life. Lake is incredible and has such a joyful personality. She has a great life ahead of her.”

Tracey continued, “Puppy Raisers typically have their pup for around 12-16 months. I’ve always felt supported in working with my puppy, and there are plenty of guides and videos to help you get up to speed. Having a dedicated Puppy Development Advisor from Guide Dogs is invaluable.

I feel an enormous sense of pride as I see our pups progress and overcome challenges. There are so many people willing to help. It’s a lovely community that wants all the dogs to succeed and is always happy to assist.”

Lake is now in training at Guide Dogs Scotland’s regional centre in Forfar, where she will undergo early and advanced training before being matched with someone with sight loss, giving them freedom and independence.

If Puppy Raising isn’t for you, there are several other volunteer roles available, such as fostering a guide dog in training or joining our community fundraising teams.
