Befriender

As a Volunteer Befriender you will support young people in your local community with Speech, Language and Communication difficulties. You will be part of a knowledgeable and experienced team that are committed to improving the quality of life for young people and their families. You will be enthusiastic and committed to making a positive change for young people.

In your role as a Volunteer Befriender you will:

• Develop and promote a positive relationship with the young person you are matched with


• Establish and maintain appropriate boundaries in the befriending relationship


• Agree the types of activities the young person would like to undertake, ensuring the activities comply with the service's safety requirements


• Assist the young person in working towards the overall project outcomes


• Acknowledge the young person's right to make decisions for themselves, which is non-judgmental and enables them to achieve their goals


• Be consistent and dependable in supporting a young person and their family


• Recognise that the relationship with the young person may be challenging, ensuring that you remain professional at all times


• Agree to abide by the confidentiality policy and any other policies and procedures of the service


• Work in conjunction with members of staff to provide a quality service, by participating in support and supervision sessions with the Project Co‐ordinator, referring concerns about the young person where appropriate and completing monitoring forms


• Offer an accepting and understanding presence and work within a non‐discriminatory framework.


• Attend all training that SLCo provides to assist you in your role.


• Provide updates/feedback around how the sessions went after you have met with the young person


• Ensure that the Project Co-ordinator is aware of all meetings and advised of any changes or cancelations to any planned session with a young person


Experience required

You will be enthusiastic and committed to making a positive change for young people.
