More and more people need help, so we are growing our network of dedicated
caseworkers. Come and join our team! You will be making a real difference to
the lives of those who need financial, practical, and emotional support.
What you will be doing:
Arranging to talk with a Veteran or their family member (on the phone or face to face) at a mutually convenient time
Understanding peoples’ support needs and gathering information to assess their circumstances
Typing written case reports to apply for financial assistance
Sign-posting to services providing specialist support, such as mental health or housing support
Keeping beneficiaries and the SSAFA regional office up to date with progress
Experience required
Friendly and approachable
Great written and verbal communication skills
Non-judgemental

Good IT skills
Travel details
Home based with face to face visits usually in peoples homes or remotely over the telephone or online. Guidance on personal safety will be provided.
Travel expenses
You will be reimbursed for travel at 55p a mile and any other actual out of pocket expenses
Support
Training details
Expert trainers will fully prepare you to manage a beneficiary case as a SSAFA Caseworker either at a residential 2 day course or online webinars including how to:
Identify the core skills you will use to work effectively as a Caseworker
Establish safe contact with a beneficiary, and plan your first visit.
Understand some of the challenges of casework, including how to support beneficiaries with poor mental health.
Identify support for both you and your beneficiary, and how to access them
Use our Case Management System.
Complete forms clearly and effectively.
Complete a test beneficiary case study, completed after the course using the knowledge gained and trainer will mark and give feedback
Prior to attending the training, you will complete 4 e-learnings that cover data protection, confidentiality and boundaries, personal safety, and safeguarding, so you are up to date on how to keep yourself, clients, their families and personal information safe.
After completing the training you will be offered:
Shadow visits prior to taking on a case
Support from Scottish Regional Office staff team with a named point of contact
Optional Level 3 Caseworker Accreditation through the Open College of London (OCN London)
Connection to your local SSAFA Branch for peer support, social events and being part of the wider SSAFA community
Wellbeing resources to support you to nuture your own wellbeing so that you can fully support our beneficiaries.

Minimum age: 18
Frequency & commitment
Flexible timings with a weekly or monthly commitment
Volunteers (aged 18-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
