Online Volunteer Tutor 1-1

VTO provide free tutor support to children and young people aged 8-18, to help tackle the poverty related attainment gap in Scotland. We work with young people from diverse backgrounds including, but not limited to, those who are care-experienced, those who speak English as an additional language (EAL) or those faced with perceived barriers to learning, e.g. Autism Spectrum Disorder or Attention Deficit Disorder; however, any child who is struggling to engage with education and is falling significantly behind in class, could be helped by our 1:1 tutoring services. Our volunteers focus on developing a person-centred tutoring experience through relationship building to instil confidence and increase motivation and educational attainment. Volunteers from a range of diverse backgrounds and experiences are welcome.

Our volunteers work one-on-one with a young person who needs support with their learning online. You can choose to tutor once a week, helping primary or secondary pupils re-engage with schoolwork and build skills in Math or English, or opt for twice-weekly sessions to assist secondary students preparing for formal National 3, 4, or 5 qualifications. The role also involves:
-Relationship building and mentoring
-Monitoring and recording progress of learning and keeping in contact with your assigned VTO Learning Communities Coordinator
-Supporting learning in English and/or Maths and potentially other subjects, dependant on experience and pupil need
-Sourcing and creating engaging ways to support pupils’ skills and learning
-Subjects include English and Maths, and potentially others subjects

You don't need any formal teaching or mentoring qualifications to become a tutor, but we ask for creativity and enthusiasm to communicate and work with young people and for the tutors to be supportive, empathetic and non-judgemental.

We want to support our volunteers to develop their skills and experience during their time with us and some of the benefits of joining our volunteer team include:
-Satisfaction of giving something back and reducing the attainment gap
-Gain teaching, tutoring and youth work experience useful in careers working with young people
-Developing new enhanced communication skills
-Enhanced personal statement/CV
-Fulfil volunteering requirement of Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme/Saltire Awards scheme if eligible
-Reference after 6 months and training provided

If you think this role could be for you, then we'd love to hear from you!
