To assist ward staff in the delivery of patient care by carrying out a range of non-clinical tasks and activities. This may include;
-Assisting in the preparation and serving of refreshments to patients; assisting patients to complete menu cards, handing out cutlery and crockery, serving tea/coffee, refreshing water jugs.
-Assisting patients under the direction and guidance from staff at mealtimes with serving refreshments, opening sandwich packets. This will not involve in assisting with patient feeding.
-Engaging with patients to provide company and stimulation; games such as dominoes and cards, reading with/to patients, conversational visits.
-Helping to make the ward a safe and welcoming environment.
Experience required
Good listening and communication skills. Patience, understanding and sensitivity. Maintain confidentiality. Willingness to participate in identified training necessary/relevant to the role. To be motivated in the volunteering activities undertaken. Ability to interact with the healthcare team. Ensure hand hygiene and infection control guidelines are adhered to at all times.
Travel details
Wards within Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy. Accessible via public transport with onsite/street parking available.
Travel expenses
Travel expenses will be reimbursed; public transport costs and mileage rates for use of own vehicle at 28p per mile.
Support
Training details
Preplacement occupational health check questionnaire. , NHS Scotland volunteer induction module. More in-depth infection control training.
-If appropriate to ward area; Alzheimer Scotland, Dementia Friends training.
-Any role specific manual handling training provided by NHS Health & Safety Team.
-Fire training to be completed annually. Refresher training every 3 years.

Frequency & commitment
2-3 Hours per week
Volunteers (aged 16-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
