Carers Call

Carers Link provides information and support to unpaid carers who live in East Dunbartonshire or care for
someone who lives in East Dunbartonshire.
If you look after a family member or friend who cannot manage without your support, you are a carer. You
may be “doing what anyone would do”, but we can help you.
Our Carers Call dedicated telephone service supports carers in East Dunbartonshire. Volunteers call
carers offering a chat which may be about their caring situation or about anything at all. This can reduce
the stress and isolation carers can experience.
Volunteers are not there to solve problems but offer support and contact. Carers feedback reports they are
relieved not to feel so alone and have access to other services offered by Carers Link or other
organisations. Calls are made fortnightly, monthly or 3 monthly, so each caller has a dedicated list of
carers to call.

Experience required

Ideally a good listener, someone who likes chatting, with an understanding of carers needs. Empathy,
discretion and a non- judgemental attitude are important when hearing people’s different and sensitive
situations. Experience of being a carer would be advantageous but not essential. It is necessary to have
good boundaries and an awareness of confidentiality. Being able to support someone through whatever
they are experiencing is the main skill, as problems may not be resolved.

Support
Training details

Induction usually happens ether 1:1 or in a group of 3 or 4 Volunteers.
Training can happen in a group setting here at our offices, and Individual training can also be provided for
specific tasks. Informal day to day support and supervision can happen during the working day or by
arrangement.
Support and Supervision sessions are important to support our volunteers in the tasks they do. Sessions
are scheduled every 6 months, but Volunteers are encouraged to speak to The Volunteer Co-ordinator if
they have any issue at all regarding Volunteering. Other members of staff are always on hand should the
Volunteer Coordinator be unavailable.
Volunteers also have the use of a confidential employee telephone counselling service and are welcome to
use this if they should feel the need.
We aim to make sure our Volunteers are well supported as they play a key role in our organisation and
work as part of our team.
