Bus Escort

Providing transport is vital to older adults in our community to enable them to get out and about to groups and activities. Mearns Kirk Helping Hands has a minibus that we use to bring people to and from our groups. In order to do this safely, we're looking for a volunteer bus escort. The role would be to meet the bus driver at the bus and support the driver with the route to pick up participants coming to the group.

At each stop, the escort would go to the participants door to get them and, if needed, provide assistance to the bus. The escort would then do the same on the route back, helping participants from the bus and back to their home.

A bus escort should be able to get on and off the bus multiple times and feel confident in providing assistance to participants. Participants' mobility will be assessed to ensure they can get on the bus but assistance may be required, should there be adverse weather or use of mobility aids. Moving and assistance training will be provided for the role.

The role is fun and rewarding in enabling older people to get to groups and activities. Bus escorts are required once a week on a Tuesday afternoon.
