Field Animal Care Volunteer

Field Animal Care:
Tasks include some feeding, enclosure cleaning, laying new straw, poo scooping to keep the paddocks clean, cleaning feeding bowls and water troughs and doing halter work with our alpacas.
There will be other tasks which may vary seasonally. These will be noted for you at the start of each session.
We are also keen to have volunteers coming in for a shorter session on the weekends to assist with poo scooping in the alpaca paddocks.
All of our animal care volunteers are asked to commit to at least one regular session per week for 4 weeks.
Full training and tools will be provided.
Necessary gear: wellies, old clothes, and layers (it’s an all-weather role!) will be needed, as well as heavy gloves. We do have some work gloves here and a selection of wellies that you can use if you do not have your own.

We may be able to help with transport costs to and from Birkhill House. Discuss with us when you apply.

The Background:
At Birkhill House CIC is a well established animal assisted activity/therapy venture near Earlston in the Scottish Borders, which also offers an array of modern and traditional crafting opportunities. The focus at Birkhill House is on wellness and mindfulness – taking a moment out to be compassionate and nurture the creative side in all of us.
Set on nine acres of beautiful land about 30 miles south of Edinburgh city centre, and with a rich farming and equine history, the property is now a busy small-holding, whose residents include Huacaya alpacas, Castlemilk Moorit sheep, pygmy & Golden Guernsey goats, beautiful domestic Ragdoll cats, a gaggle of small dogs, a plethora of hens and a friendly family of peafowl.
At Birkhill House CIC, we recognise the value of volunteers. The more help we have with day-to-day running tasks, the more time is freed up for us to programme plan and source funding in order to enhance the crafting, animal assisted activity and horticultural offerings here.

Our aim is to provide clear benefit to the volunteers who help with our animal care, crafting preparations, gardening and general smallholding upkeep. Being outside, communing with the animals, lending creative flair in support of the programme here, helping to keep spaces clean, coming up with storage solutions and repairing tools and equipment are all ways to engage and take away a sense of pride and accomplishment.
