Bus Escort Volunteer

Glasgow Disabled Scouts (77th Glasgow Disabled Scout Group) is the only Scout Group in Scotland dedicated to young people with physical disabilities and life-limiting conditions, aged 6 to 25. The group runs weekly Scout sessions supported by a network of buses across the city, ensuring members can take part regardless of where they live. Through adventure, fun, and friendship, the Scouts help young people build confidence, independence, and skills for life in a fully inclusive environment.

To make this possible, the group relies on volunteers who give their time to support young people on their journey, help ensure safe transport, and create welcoming spaces where every member can thrive.

We’re looking for 2 new Journey Support Volunteers (also known as Bus Escorts) to support the 77th Glasgow Disabled Scout Group. One role is based in Glasgow East and the other in Glasgow North.

Every Monday evening, the Group runs a fleet of minibuses across Glasgow to bring young people with physical disabilities and life-limiting conditions to their weekly Scout sessions. On each bus, we need a second adult volunteer – the Journey Support Volunteer – who ensures safety, provides reassurance, and offers practical support during the journey.

This role is vital in helping our young people take part in Scouts, build independence, and enjoy adventures with their peers.

Role Requirements

  • Aged 18 or over

  • Live locally (or willing to travel to meet the bus)

  • Willing to join the PVG scheme (with full support provided)

  • Patient, understanding, and committed to being a regular part of the team

  • No driving or technical experience required

  • Able to volunteer on Monday evenings (typically 7.00 pm – 9.30 pm)

Support is provided at every stage of the role. You will receive a full induction, safeguarding training, and guidance on supporting young people with disabilities. Experienced leaders and fellow volunteers will be on hand during each journey to offer advice and practical help. You’ll never be left on your own – the role is always carried out as part of a team, with ongoing training opportunities to build your skills and confidence.

If you are interested, please click the ‘Apply’ button below (available when logged in and registered). You will then be contacted by the coordinator by email or phone call. If you have not heard back after 5 working days, the first step is to contact the organisation with the contact details provided. You could also check your junk/spam folder for your emails, just in case the response is there. If that doesn’t work out, then please feel free to contact Volunteer Glasgow at info@volunteerglasgow.org

After You Apply

Initial Contact – A leader from Glasgow Disabled Scouts will be in touch to thank you for your application and arrange an informal chat.
Informal Meeting / Intro Call – You’ll have the chance to learn more about the role, the group, and ask any questions before committing.
PVG (Protection of Vulnerable Groups) Check – As the role involves working with children and young people, you’ll be supported through the PVG application process (the group covers the cost).
Induction & Training – You’ll receive safeguarding training, an introduction to supporting young people with disabilities, and a clear outline of your responsibilities on the bus.
Shadowing – Before taking on the role fully, you’ll shadow an experienced Journey Support Volunteer so you feel confident and supported.
Ongoing Support – Once you’re settled in, you’ll be part of a friendly team of volunteers with regular opportunities for training, support, and social activities.
