Chair of the Board

“Shape the future of Instant Neighbour – become our next Chair.”

Instant Neighbour is seeking a new Chair of the Board of Trustees to lead our governance and support our mission of tackling poverty and improving lives across Aberdeen City and Shire.

For over 40 years, Instant Neighbour has been at the heart of the community, providing vital services including:
• Emergency food parcels through our food bank
• Affordable reused furniture and household goods
• The Giving Tree Appeal, ensuring thousands of children receive gifts at Christmas
• Employment and volunteering opportunities for people furthest from the job market

We are looking for an individual with:
• Strong leadership skills and the ability to chair meetings effectively
• A commitment to our values of compassion, dignity, and sustainability
• The ability to act as an ambassador for Instant Neighbour across the community
• Experience in governance, strategy, or charity leadership (desirable but not essential)

Time commitment: Approximately 1–2 days per month, including quarterly board meetings and occasional events.

This is an unpaid voluntary role, but one that offers the opportunity to make a lasting difference in people’s lives while shaping the future of one of Aberdeen’s leading social charities.

Training details

Relevant training and support is provided. At Instant Neighbour, we recognise that every new Chair brings unique experience and perspective. Induction will be informal, with opportunities to meet the CEO and Board members to gain insight into our work and governance. We will provide access to OSCR guidance and key resources to support understanding of trustee responsibilities. Should additional training be requested, this will be considered to ensure the Chair feels fully equipped for the role. Our approach is supportive, collaborative, and designed to give the Chair confidence in leading the Board effectively.

Volunteers (aged 11-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
