Befriender (Phone calls)

Become a MADE4U Befriender

Our Befriending Service grew out of the Community Response Team set up during the Covid lockdowns, when local volunteers stepped up to support the most vulnerable in our community. What began as an emergency lifeline has now developed into a vital ongoing service tackling loneliness, isolation, and everyday challenges that people in our community still face.

Today, the service runs every Monday and Wednesday, 10am–2pm, offering support, a friendly listening ear, and practical help such as meal bookings and signposting to other services.

As a volunteer befriender, you’ll:

Provide friendly check-in calls from our helpline number (we’ll support with phone access/data)

Offer time to listen and chat with people who may be struggling with isolation, family pressures, or mental health challenges

Help arrange practical support such as food pickups, meal services, or referrals to other community resources

Our aim is simple: to make sure no one feels alone, and everyone has someone they can turn to.

If you’d like to make a difference by giving just a few hours a week, we’d love to hear from you!

Experience required

Good listener – able to give people time and space to share how they’re feeling.

Empathetic and non-judgemental – showing understanding and kindness to people from all walks of life.

Reliable and consistent – available for agreed times (Mondays & Wednesdays, 10–2) so service users know they can count on you.

Confident communicator – comfortable speaking on the phone and able to build trust through conversation.

Problem-solver – able to signpost or connect people with further support
