Board Members and Treasurer

The duties of a board member (or Trustee) for the charity THAW Orkney (Tackling Household Affordable Warmth) are primarily focused on strategic oversight, governance, and financial responsibility.

Core Responsibilities - the board members' duties can be grouped into the following key areas:

  • Strategic Direction: They are responsible for providing leadership and setting the strategic direction for the charity to ensure it is fulfilling its mission: to reduce levels of fuel poverty and achieve affordable warmth for households in Orkney.

  • Legal & Ethical Compliance (Governance): Trustees must ensure the charity operates legally, ethically, and in a manner consistent with its governing document. This includes complying with all relevant legislation and the regulations set by the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR).

  • Financial Stewardship: Board members have a legal duty to safeguard the charity's assets and resources. They must monitor the financial viability and sustainability of the organisation, approve budgets, and ensure proper financial processes and controls are in place.

  • Accountability: They are accountable for the charity's performance and decisions to the public, funders, and the regulator (OSCR). This involves regularly reviewing the charity's progress toward its charitable outcomes.

  • Support and Oversight: They hire and support the senior staff (like the Manager) in delivering the day-to-day aims, while maintaining a clear distinction between the board's governance (strategic) role and the staff's management (operational) role.

What could a volunteer gain from the experience:

  • Making a Tangible Difference: You get to contribute directly to the strategic work of a charity that has a profound, life-changing impact on vulnerable households in your local Orkney community. This direct link to the cause is often the most rewarding aspect.

  • Fulfilling Civic Duty: You become a "guardian of purpose" for a vital community organisation, helping to ensure its long-term stability and effectiveness in the islands.

  • Networking and Connection: You get to work closely with other passionate and skilled individuals from diverse backgrounds—including local professionals, other trustees, and the charity's staff—all united by a common commitment to Orkney's wellbeing.

Experience required

  • Passion for the Cause: A genuine and strong commitment to reducing fuel poverty and helping vulnerable households achieve affordable warmth in Orkney.

  • Local Knowledge: A good understanding of the specific challenges, geography (including the linked and non-linked Isles), and service needs of the Orkney community.

  • Values Alignment: A commitment to the charity's principles, such as promoting an inclusive, non-linear approach to support and a focus on dignity and fairness.
