Marie Curie
- VO104460
Marie Curie Hospice, Glasgow provides specialist care and emotional support to people living with a terminal illness and their families, free of charge. Based at Balornock Road in the north of the city, the hospice offers in-patient, day and community services that help people live as well as possible, for as long as possible. By volunteering as a Patient Driver, you’ll be part of this compassionate team – making it easier for patients to get to and from the care they rely on, and helping them feel safe, supported and respected on every journey.
What you’ll be doing:
As a Volunteer Patient Driver for Marie Curie, you will be a vital part of our hospice and community care team. Your responsibilities will typically include:
Collecting patients from their homes (pre-arranged times) and safely transporting them to their appointments, day-services sessions or stays at the hospice.
Returning patients home when their visit or service ends; ensuring they gain safe entry to their home and are comfortable and secure.
Driving with sensitivity and respect for people living with illnesses they’re likely to die from, and for their families.
Referring any medical, social or personal concerns that the patient or their family raise during the journey to the hospice or Marie Curie staff.
Helping with other driver-related tasks when necessary (e.g., making sure the vehicle is safe, planning reasonable routes, coordinating with the hospice volunteer supervisor). See the “guidance for volunteer drivers” document for more detail on safe driving practices, risk assessment, transporting oxygen cylinders, etc.
Commitment & Timing:
You’ll typically be asked to commit to a regular shift (for example: one half-day or full-day per week, or as agreed) so that patients can rely on the service.
Times will vary depending on patient appointments, hospice services and local need — flexibility is appreciated.
A full induction will be provided before you begin driving, including training in health & safety, moving/handling (if required), vehicle checks, and understanding Marie Curie’s values and confidentiality protocols.
Because the role involves driving, you will need to complete a volunteer declaration annually, submit your driving licence, MOT certificate and insurance documentation if using your own vehicle.
Support you’ll receive:
Full induction training covering the role, policies (including confidentiality, safeguarding, infection control) and safe driving practices specific to transporting patients.
Ongoing support and supervision by the volunteer coordinator or volunteer services team at Marie Curie, including reviews of your volunteering, refresher training and access to volunteer resources.
Access to Marie Curie’s volunteer network and opportunities to connect with other volunteers, share experiences and receive recognition of your contribution.
