As a Volunteer ESOL Assistant, you will work alongside our lead tutor to empower women who are learning English as an additional language. You will play a key part in helping participants especially New Scots, develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through informal conversation, practical activities, and positive encouragement. Your role is essential in helping women lead full, active lives and integrate into civil society.
This is a great opportunity to gain valuable, hands-on experience supporting adult learners in a community-based ESOL setting. Enhance your communication, teamwork, and intercultural skills by working with a diverse membership of over 22 nationalities. Play a direct role in improving the lives of women in your local community by promoting integration and mutual understanding, meet new people and become a vital part of a welcoming, diverse group dedicated to fostering inclusivity. Key Responsibilities
Assist the lead tutor in delivering ESOL sessions, providing dedicated one-to-one or small group support as required.
Help create a warm, inclusive, and respectful atmosphere where women from over 22 nationalities feel comfortable practicing their English.
Support learners with functional language relevant to everyday life in Glasgow, such as shopping, healthcare, and community engagement.
Encourage engagement through interactive conversations, educational games, and structured group activities.
Assist with the preparation and clearing of learning materials before and after sessions at the St Matthews Centre.
Offer gentle encouragement and constructive feedback to help build the learners’ confidence and social engagement.

Experience required
- Strong command of spoken and written English.
- High levels of patience, empathy, and effective communication skills.
- Genuine interest in supporting and empowering women from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
- Prior teaching or ESOL experience is beneficial, but not essential.
- Ability to work collaboratively and follow the guidance of the lead tutor.
- Strong commitment to regular attendance and consistent volunteering.
Travel details
The role takes at the St. Matthews Community Centre, 200 Balmore Road, Possilpark, Glasgow G22 6LJ. Parkhouse train station is in easy walking distance and the area is served by a number of regular bus services including numbers 7, 7A, 8, 75, 90, 128, M3.
Travel expenses
A flat rate of 10 pounds will be provided for out of pocket expenses.

Availability
Volunteers (aged 14-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
