Simulated Patient

The Volunteer Patient Programme in Inverness is now well established having been set up in 2008. The programme is run from our state of the art training facility at the Clinical Skills Centre housed within the Highland Medical Education Centre. We rely on members of the public from all walks of life and all ages to volunteer for a few sessions throughout the year.
The volunteers contribute towards the Education and Assessment of Medical Students and Post Graduate (PG) Medical/Nurse trainees by helping to provide a realistic learning opportunity where the students can gain confidence and competence in a safe environment.
Volunteer Patients play a vital role in healthcare training. There is no prior training or experience necessary to be selected to join the programme. We look for people of all age groups. You don’t need any “acting” experience. All we ask is that Volunteer Patients be reliable and commit to the educational sessions. We cover travel expenses and also provide refreshments. There is a friendly atmosphere and an opportunity to meet other volunteers.

Support
Training details

You will be invited to attend a training session and then “shadow” an experienced Volunteer until you feel confident to be involved yourself. There are also regular training / update days for Volunteers to attend.
From initial contact with the department, we will ensure that you as a volunteer feel supported in the process of joining the team of Volunteers.
There is no prior training or acting experience necessary.
We will ensure that you are given the opportunity to come in and observe other volunteers in the variety of different roles, until you feel confident to be involved yourself.
We provide mandatory in house training for all the volunteers which is held within the department and is a 2-3 hour informative session covering Feedback and Role Play. This is small group training which aims to give all volunteers regardless of experience, time to meet and ask questions to support any apprehensions you may have. We also ask you complete Equality and Diversity training, this is done online and we are also able to support you with this.
Annually there is a half day update for all volunteers, again this is a great opportunity to meet fellow volunteers and the team if you haven't met them all by then.
We also appreciate that not all volunteers like to use technology so if support is required for this, we can help.
