Bytes and Blether is seeking new volunteer Tech Support Helpers. In this role, volunteers support older adults during friendly, informal sessions at the User Centre, University of Dundee. This support can make a huge difference to how people understand and use everyday technology such as using laptops and smartphones, creating documents, accessing online services, and staying safe online.
Tech Support Helpers don’t need to be experts. Their role is to listen, be patient and encouraging, and work with people to solve problems together. This might involve supporting small groups or helping someone find a way through something they’re stuck on.
Sessions are relaxed and social, including time for tea, coffee, and conversation, where you’ll help create a welcoming space for people to connect and learn from each other.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys meeting new people and wants to make a positive difference in their local community.
Experience required
You do not need to be a technology expert to take part, but the following skills and qualities will help you in this role:
- Basic digital skills (e.g. using smartphones, laptops, email or the internet)
- Patience and willingness to solve problems and support others to learn
- Good listening skills and the ability to explain things clearly in simple terms
- A friendly, approachable manner that helps people feel comfortable asking questions
- Reliability and commitment to attending sessions where possible
- Experience of supporting others, volunteering, or working with people is helpful but not essential.
An interest in helping others build confidence, learn, and take part in everyday digital life is the most important thing.
