Family Support Volunteer

Being a parent isn't easy, it can be lonely, frustrating, heart breaking and overwhelming. All parents struggle from time to time. At Home Start, we recognise this and work to support parents not just to survive but thrive!

Home Start are now looking for Family Support Volunteers who will be matched with a local Falkirk family to provide weekly support visits. Family Support Volunteers offer friendship and some practical help within the family home.

Volunteers must respect and protect the dignity and identity of each individual, reassuring families that nearly everyone at some time or another, experiences difficulties in bringing up children. Their role is to emphasise the positive aspects of family life, encouraging parents’ strengths and emotional well-being for the ultimate benefit of their own children while developing a relationship with the family. Volunteers will also help families, including those living in rural areas, make use of local groups and support services, so that they and their children can widen their circle of friends and contacts.

As a Home Start volunteer, you will be given training and support to be effective and make a real difference to families in your community. You’ll also develop skills, experience, meet new people and become part of a community - all whilst supporting parents to bond with their children and increase their confidence!

Experience required

While it is not necessary it would be advantageous if you are a parent yourself or have experience or a desire to work with children. More than experience or training, it is important that volunteers are caring, compassionate, trustworthy, reliable and creative.
