Walk Leader

Step Forth aims to improve the health and wellbeing of people in the community by encouraging them to increase their level of physical activity through participation in regular health walks. We offer walks throughout the Falkirk area, for more information about the programme please visit: https://www.falkirkleisureandculture.org/fit-and-active/step-forth/.

Walk Leader lead established, accessible, community- based health walks for people wishing to improve their physical, mental and social health through walking. Our Leaders ensure that walks are friendly, safe and well run.

As a walk leader you may be responsible for the following tasks:
• Plan routes for health walks ensuring they are safe.
• Lead health walks ensuring they are friendly and enjoyable.
• Check walking routes and familiarise yourself with it prior to leading the walk.
• Welcome participants and provide a short summary of the walk helping everyone to feel supported.
• May be required to assist walk co-ordinator in risk assessing walking routes and complete risk assessment forms.
• Ensure that new walkers complete a health walk questionnaire before they take their first walk. Giving to walk co-ordinator for appropriate filing.
• Maintain a register of all people on the walk and keep records, updating the walk co-ordinator.
• Ensure that everyone completes the walk, or if anyone needs to stop early, ensure they get back to the start safely

Experience required

• Enthusiasm for walking with a friendly, sociable personality.
• Should be able to lead a walk at a moderate pace for 60mins.
• Good communication skills to encourage, motivate and provide support to participants.
• Reliable and punctual to ensure the planned walk runs as scheduled.
• Commitment to leading a walk on a regular basis.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Willingness to undergo training in your role a walk leader.

Travel details

Walks take place throughout Falkirk, and we welcome anyone looking to volunteer, though we currently have the following areas where Walk Leaders would be particularly appreciated: Kinneil Estate & Helix Park.

Support
Training details

All Volunteer Walk Leaders will be required to attend a one-day training prior to leading any walks. There will also be ongoing support and guidance from the Walk Co-ordinator.
