Group Befriender

A group befriender will work with a team of volunteers to run a friendship group in one of our localities in South Lanarkshire with the support of a group befriending coordinator. The groups are run for older people (50 and over) in their area that are looking for more social contact. Volunteers will spend time with our clients offering companionship to build their confidence and link them back into the local community. Your role will consist of helping to make teas and coffees, welcoming in guests and running activities at the group such as crafts, seated exercise, reminiscence to name a few of the activities we run. You will have the support of staff and other volunteers while at the group.

Some of the skills we look for in a volunteer are: An empathy with older people; reliable and trustworthy; being sensitive and supportive; flexible; Having a few hours spare each week; Being friendly; Being interested in people.

All volunteers are given a group befriending training session as well as ongoing training such as dementia awareness, mental health awareness and others throughout volunteering role.

Volunteers (aged 18-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
