Project Volunteer

Woven Together is a community research project that explores the history of people of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic origin in and around Dundee. We want to uncover as many stories as we can and showcase them on this site and through various other activities. Possible outputs include community events, a pop-up exhibition, school projects, and more – we want your ideas about how best to share the results of our research.

How can I get involved?

There are various ways that you can help us, depending on your own interest. Here are some of the main ones:

  1. Archive researchers – we need lots of volunteers to investigate archives, records, newspapers, museum collections, and other sources to find information and turn it into stories

  2. Oral historians – we want people to record interviews with friends or relatives about their experiences in Dundee

  3. Video historians – we want people to record short films to capture visual histories such as traditional recipes, festivals, or fashions

  4. Copywriters – some of our archive detectives may not be able to write up their findings, so we need people to turn their information into readable blog posts for the website

  5. Information verifiers and Proofreaders – before we publish any information we need volunteers to check for accuracy

  6. Video/audio editors – we need people who can edit video and audio recordings into suitable packages for the website

  7. Web editors – we’re looking for volunteers with web design and editing skills to improve and add to this site

  8. Exhibition and Event Hosts – maybe you have a venue that could host an activity relating to the project?

  9. Sponsors/Partners – perhaps you’d like to be more actively involved in the project as a partner or sponsor of one of our activities?

What’s in it for me?

There are lots of reasons to get involved in the project. As well as doing something positive for the community, you will have the opportunity to gain new skills (eg in research, interviewing, web editing etc) and get valuable work experience to boost your CV. Anyone who complete at least 10 hours of volunteering will receive a certificate of participation and for our most active volunteers, we may be able to provide employment references where appropriate.

The amount of time you need to spend on the project will differ from person to person.
