Befriender Children and Young People aged 7 - 15 years

Volunteers are matched up on a one-to-one basis with either a vulnerable young person or a young adult. The matches meet regularly either weekly or fortnightly for a few hours at a time. The aim is to engage in purposeful activities within the community which wil help to encourage increased self-esteem, self-worth and self-confidence. It is also about building on the young person or young adults existing skills and developing new ones.

Experience required

Patience, understanding, tolerance, open-minded, non-judgemental, have the ability to motivate, the ability to listen, empathetic, good sense of humour, ability to try new activities and have fun.

Travel details

Shetland wide.
If the volunteer has a car it can be used for outings, otherwise travel is by public transport.
Travelling is considered in the matching process.

Travel expenses

Yes.
Volunteer expenses, mileage and some on-going training costs are all available.

Eight week initial training programme.

Restrictions

Minimum age: 17
Age restriction due to safety issues. Male volunteers will not be matched with female clients.

A few hours a week or fortnight for a minimum of six months after the volunteer has completed befriending initial training - Flexible.

Volunteers (aged 17-25) taking part in this opportunity are eligible to claim Saltire Awards hours for their activity.
